MLS Reveals First XI for 2026 All-Star Game

Major League Soccer has officially announced the First XI players selected for the 2026 MLS All-Star Game, and the lineup is packed with global superstars, rising talents, and World Cup participants. For football fans in Cambodia and across Southeast Asia, the roster highlights how far MLS has grown as a destination for elite footballers and emerging stars alike.

The annual showcase will take place on July 29 at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina, where the MLS All-Stars will face the best players from Mexico’s Liga MX in one of North America’s biggest football events.

Few players attract global attention like Lionel Messi, and the Argentine legend once again headlines the MLS All-Star squad after earning selection for a third consecutive year.

Messi and Son Lead the Attack

The attacking trio selected in the First XI includes Messi, Chicago Fire striker Hugo Cuypers, and LAFC superstar Son Heung-min. Their inclusion reflects both outstanding performances during the first half of the MLS season and their immense popularity among fans.

Son’s selection is particularly significant. The South Korean icon becomes only the second South Korean player in MLS history to earn All-Star recognition, further enhancing his legacy in Asian football.

For Cambodian football fans, Son remains one of Asia’s greatest modern footballers and a source of inspiration for young players throughout the region.

Young Talent Meets Experience

The 2026 First XI is not solely about established superstars. MLS has also rewarded several emerging talents who have impressed throughout the season.

Among the most exciting selections is 19-year-old Zavier Gozo of Real Salt Lake. The young midfielder becomes only the second teenager selected to the MLS All-Star Game in the past five editions, underlining the league’s growing reputation for developing young talent.

The midfield group also features Sebastian Berhalter and former league MVP Hany Mukhtar, both of whom have enjoyed outstanding campaigns in 2026.

Nashville SC Dominates the First XI

One of the biggest stories from the announcement is the dominance of Nashville SC. The club earned three First XI selections, more than any other team in the league. Goalkeeper Brian Schwake, defender Andy Najar, and midfielder Hany Mukhtar were all voted into the starting lineup.

Chicago Fire also enjoyed a strong showing with two players earning places in the First XI roster. Defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi and striker Hugo Cuypers were rewarded for their excellent performances during the first half of the campaign.

Mbokazi’s selection is particularly historic as he becomes only the second South African player ever chosen for an MLS All-Star Game. He also received more fan votes than any other player in this year’s voting process.

World Cup Stars Ready for the Showcase

The All-Star roster features several players who are also participating in the FIFA World Cup 2026. Messi, Son, Tim Ream, Sebastian Berhalter, and Mbekezeli Mbokazi all earned international call-ups and bring valuable experience to the showcase event.

Their presence demonstrates the increasing quality of MLS and the league’s growing influence on the global football stage. MLS recently set a record with 44 active players selected for World Cup squads, a significant milestone for the competition.

What Happens Next?

The First XI represents only part of the final squad. Charlotte FC head coach Dean Smith will select an additional 13 players, while MLS Commissioner Don Garber will add two more names to complete the 26-man roster.

Fans can expect several more high-profile stars to join the squad before the final roster announcement later this summer.

Why Cambodian Fans Should Watch

For Cambodian football supporters, the MLS All-Star Game offers a unique opportunity to watch some of the world’s most recognizable footballers competing alongside the next generation of stars. The combination of Messi’s magic, Son’s brilliance, and the league’s emerging talents promises an entertaining spectacle.

With MLS continuing to attract elite players from Europe, South America, and Asia, the 2026 All-Star Game could be one of the strongest editions in the event’s history.
