Freiburg 4-1 Werder Bremen

For Cambodian football fans following European football, Suzuki’s performance will be one of the biggest talking points from the opening Bundesliga weekend. The Japanese forward scored three times and earned an outstanding 9.4 Sofascore Rating, making him the clear Player of the Match.

Freiburg Make Fast Start to New Bundesliga Season

Freiburg did not need long to establish their authority.

The hosts opened the scoring in the 29th minute when Jan-Niklas Beste delivered a dangerous corner towards the near post. Suzuki reacted brilliantly, getting ahead of his marker to head the ball into the net and give Freiburg a 1-0 lead.

The goal rewarded Freiburg for their control and attacking intent.

Werder Bremen worked hard defensively and won a large number of individual duels, but Freiburg looked more dangerous whenever they reached the final third.

The home side eventually doubled their advantage just before half-time.

Igor Matanović completed a flowing attacking move after Freiburg progressed through the centre of the pitch. Maximilian Eggestein helped begin the move before Matthias Ginter supplied the final pass for Matanović to finish.

At the break, Freiburg had a valuable 2-0 advantage.

Suzuki Completes His Hat-Trick After the Break

If Bremen hoped to make a comeback after half-time, Suzuki quickly ended those hopes.

Just three minutes into the second half, Suzuki scored again to make it 3-0.

His movement and finishing were particularly impressive. Freiburg found space during the transition, allowing Suzuki to drive forward before producing a clinical finish.

The Japanese attacker was not finished.

In the 55th minute, Matanović returned the favour by creating another opportunity for Suzuki. The forward received the ball and produced a composed left-footed finish towards the far corner.

4-0.

The hat-trick had been completed in just 55 minutes.

Suzuki’s three goals came at 29, 48 and 55 minutes, turning what initially looked like a competitive Bundesliga opener into a comfortable Freiburg victory.

Werder Bremen Find a Late Consolation

Despite the four-goal deficit, Werder Bremen continued fighting.

The visitors eventually found a goal in the 76th minute when Marco Grüll delivered an excellent corner into the penalty area.

Dariusz Stalmach rose to meet the cross and headed the ball beyond the Freiburg goalkeeper, reducing the deficit to 4-1.

Bremen continued to push for another goal during the closing stages, but Freiburg’s defence remained organised enough to protect the three-goal advantage.

The final whistle confirmed a convincing opening-day victory for Julian Schuster’s team.

Freiburg Dominated the Important Numbers

The final score was supported by the underlying statistics.

Freiburg registered:

  • 19 shots
  • 5 shots on target
  • 1.92 xG
  • 3.06 xG on target
  • 61 final-third entries
  • 25 touches in the opposition penalty area
  • 3 big chances converted

Werder Bremen managed:

  • 9 shots
  • 3 shots on target
  • 0.48 xG
  • 0.20 xG on target
  • 45 final-third entries
  • 11 penalty-area touches

The difference in expected goals on target was especially significant. Freiburg’s figure of 3.06 compared with just 0.20 for Bremen, showing how much more dangerous the hosts were when they created shooting opportunities.

Interestingly, Bremen won 57% of the duels and completed 28 tackles compared with Freiburg’s nine. However, those defensive numbers did not translate into enough attacking production.

This is an important lesson from the match: winning individual battles is not always enough if the opponent is significantly more efficient in the penalty area.

Yuito Suzuki Is the Undisputed MVP

The biggest story from Freiburg 4-1 Werder Bremen was undoubtedly Yuito Suzuki.

The forward received a 9.4 Sofascore Rating, the highest mark of any player involved in the match.

His numbers were excellent:

  • 3 goals
  • 3 shots on target
  • 1.38 xG
  • 2.74 xG on target
  • 27/30 successful passes
  • 7 recoveries
  • 52 touches
  • 16 ball carries

Perhaps most impressive was Suzuki’s efficiency.

All three of his shots were on target, and all three resulted in goals. His finishing was clinical throughout the match, while his movement consistently created problems for Bremen’s defensive line.

Sofascore’s fan vote also backed him as the match’s standout performer, with Suzuki receiving 467 of 597 votes.

Matanović Provides the Perfect Supporting Performance

While Suzuki received most of the attention, Igor Matanović also played a crucial role.

The Freiburg forward scored once and contributed two key passes, including the assist for Suzuki’s third goal.

His movement helped create space for Suzuki, while his ability to combine quickly with teammates prevented Bremen from focusing entirely on the Japanese forward.

The partnership between Suzuki and Matanović could therefore become an important attacking combination for Freiburg throughout the Bundesliga season.

How Freiburg Controlled the Match

Julian Schuster’s Freiburg lined up in a 4-2-3-1 formation and showed excellent balance between possession and direct attacking play.

Matthias Ginter was particularly influential from defence. He completed 64 of 71 passes, supplied three key passes and registered an assist.

Philipp Lienhart was even more accurate with his distribution, completing 57 of 58 passes.

In midfield, Maximilian Eggestein completed 53 of 56 passes and also hit the post.

Freiburg finished with 437 accurate passes, compared with 371 for Bremen, while their long-ball accuracy reached 74%.

The hosts therefore combined controlled build-up play with quick attacking movements when opportunities appeared.

What the Result Means for Freiburg

The Freiburg 4-1 Werder Bremen result gives Julian Schuster’s side an ideal start to the new Bundesliga campaign.

Four goals, three points and an outstanding individual performance from Suzuki provide plenty of encouragement.

More importantly, Freiburg demonstrated that they can combine possession, structured build-up play and ruthless finishing.

There will obviously be tougher tests ahead, but this opening performance suggests Freiburg have the attacking quality to cause problems for Bundesliga opponents.

Werder Bremen Have Work to Do

For Werder Bremen, the result highlights several areas that need improvement.

Daniel Thioune’s side showed plenty of competitiveness in tackles and duels, but their attacking numbers were significantly weaker.

Nine shots and just 0.48 xG are not enough against a Freiburg team that created almost four times as much expected-goal value.

The positive was the second-half response and Stalmach’s goal, but Bremen will need greater attacking efficiency in upcoming matches.

Final Verdict

Freiburg 4-1 Werder Bremen was a statement opening-day performance, with Yuito Suzuki stealing the spotlight.

His hat-trick in the 29th, 48th and 55th minutes demonstrated excellent movement, finishing and composure. His 9.4 Sofascore Rating reflected a performance that combined goals with intelligent all-round play.

Freiburg also showed impressive tactical balance, while Matanović, Ginter and Eggestein provided important contributions around their star forward.

For Cambodian Bundesliga fans, Yuito Suzuki is certainly a player worth watching this season.

If he can maintain anything close to this level of finishing and movement, Freiburg could have one of the Bundesliga’s most exciting attacking players on their hands.

One match is only the beginning — but Suzuki’s hat-trick has certainly made Freiburg’s 2026/27 opener impossible to ignore. 🇩🇪⚽
