For nearly two decades, football fans around the world have debated one question more than any other: Who is the greatest player of all time, Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo?
The rivalry between the Argentine magician and the Portuguese goal machine has produced unforgettable moments, record-breaking achievements, and endless discussions among supporters.
Since 2021, however, the conversation has evolved. While both players remain global icons, their careers have followed different paths, leading to renewed debate about legacy, trophies, and historical impact.
Messi’s Remarkable Trophy Collection
The years following 2021 have been particularly successful for Messi.
After years of international disappointment, he finally achieved several major milestones with Argentina.
International Glory Changes Everything
Messi helped Argentina win:
- Copa America
- FIFA World Cup
- Finalissima
- Additional international honors
These achievements completed one of the most impressive football careers ever seen.
For many supporters, winning the World Cup elevated Messi’s legacy to an entirely new level.
His performances in Qatar became one of the defining moments in football history.
Ronaldo’s Continued Pursuit of Success
Cristiano Ronaldo’s journey since 2021 has been different but no less impressive.
The Portuguese superstar remains one of the game’s most dedicated athletes and continues to perform at a high level despite being in the latter stages of his career.
A Record-Breaking Career
Ronaldo remains:
- International football’s all-time leading goalscorer
- One of the highest-scoring players in football history
- A multiple-time Champions League winner
- A European Championship winner
His longevity continues to amaze football fans around the world.
Why Trophies Matter in the GOAT Debate
Football supporters often use trophies as a key measurement when comparing players.
Team achievements can significantly influence how careers are remembered.
More Than Just Statistics
While goals, assists, and records remain important, major trophies often become defining moments in football history.
World Cups, continental championships, and international titles carry enormous significance because they represent success at the highest level.
For this reason, Messi’s international achievements since 2021 have strengthened his position in many GOAT discussions.
However, Ronaldo supporters point to his extraordinary consistency, longevity, and record-breaking goalscoring numbers as equally compelling arguments.
Different Paths, Same Greatness
One of the most interesting aspects of the rivalry is how different the two players are.
Messi is often praised for his creativity, vision, and playmaking ability.
Ronaldo is celebrated for his athleticism, finishing, leadership, and determination.
Two Legends, One Era
Rather than viewing the debate as a competition with only one winner, many football fans now appreciate how fortunate they were to witness both players at the same time.
The sport may never again see two superstars dominate world football simultaneously for such a long period.
The View From Cambodia
Across Cambodia, both Messi and Ronaldo enjoy enormous popularity.
Some supporters admire Messi’s creativity and achievements with Argentina.
Others prefer Ronaldo’s mentality, work ethic, and record-breaking career.
The debate remains one of football’s most passionate discussions and is likely to continue long after both legends retire.
Conclusion
The comparison between Messi and Ronaldo will likely continue for generations.
Since 2021, Messi has added several major international trophies to his collection, while Ronaldo has continued to demonstrate remarkable longevity and professionalism.
Ultimately, football fans may never fully agree on who is the greatest. What is certain is that both players have transformed the sport and created a legacy that few athletes in history can match.
For Cambodian football fans, the greatest privilege may simply be having witnessed two legends compete at the highest level during the same era.
